What is this seemingly odd regimen for detoxification that is all the rage? A short description: Dry brushing is the act of gently using a stiff natural bristle body bush (say that 3 times!) to exfoliate and brush away dead skin cells, unclog pores and help your skin excrete toxins that have been trapped.
You may wonder, doesn’t my in-shower loofa take care of this? Simply put, no. The act of dry brushing your skin stimulates the lymphatic system. My what? The Lymphatic system plays a critical role in our body’s system defending against infections. With this in mind, as you gently brush your skin upwards toward your heart, you are aiding this vital system by stimulating it to help move sluggish blood and, well, yuck, from your system. Brushing your skin not only helps promote detoxification, it also allows your skin to absorb nutrients* more efficiently. Picture your skin taking a giant breath of fresh air!
There is a technique to get the most from your dry brushing. First, remember the key word, dry. Since you are brushing away dead skin cells it is a good idea to stand in the tub or shower to catch the dry, dead skin that will fall. Wow, I could write romance novels with that line.
Always start at your feet and sweep upwards. Long, gentle, sweeping motions are best – be sure to slightly overlap as you move up. Brush lightly around the midsection & breast as these areas are typically quite sensitive. You can slightly increase intensity over your body after at least 4 or more days of brushings.
Remember to always brush towards your heart while you tend to your entire body. Don’t forget the backs of your arms and as much of your back you can reach! A handled brush helps with those areas. When you are done, step out so you can get the water on and to your temperature. Unless of course you’re a Navy Seal and you crave that blasting cold water rush. Once finished, grab a towel & pat your skin dry. Now apply your fav natural (preferably organic) oil or lotion to damp skin. You will be amazed what this simple process can do for your skin and body health.
One final tip: It’s always best to clean your brush with soap and water once a week – allow to dry in a sunny window. (wet bristles could mold if left in a humid bathroom)
